Faith seeking understanding
It's funny how these days the conversation about religious belief is framed along the lines of 'why should I believe?' In Sunday's Gospel reading (John 10:22-30), there's this whole thing with Jesus saying 'you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep' and Jesus says 'My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me.' This is so much about relationship. As they say 'People need to know that you care, before they care about what you know.' And we really do need to care, as Christ cares.
I remember just being attracted to the Church, to follow Christ. And slowly I began to hear that voice. It wasn't an argument about this faith against that, or about faith against no faith. I was just attracted, and as I slowly began to follow I began to hear that voice.
Apologetics and evangelisation, then, I guess, is less about convincing people of the truth of Christ - they will slowly learn that. It is more, perhaps, about allowing people to hear that voice, to begin to follow:
'Come and see.'
